Hilfield Friary is set on the edge of the Dorset Downs.
There have been Franciscan brothers living here in a collection of what were once farm buildings since 1921, providing refuge for the homeless, the experience of community and a place of prayer, reflection and renewal. The aim was to install a biomass heating and hot water system for the Friary, that is carbon neutral, burning wood chips sourced from local woodlands. At
At present we are receiving a woodchip delivery every month or so from a Dorset supplier, but from 2016 we’ll be drawing from our own woodland & from the Dorset County Council woodland on the edge of the Downs above the Friary, both sites being managed sustainably. We already have a year’s supply of logs, ready for chipping towards the end of next year.
